Training
Once you are a SAA club member you can start dive training.
For safety reasons, it is a requirement of the SAA that you can complete a self certification or undertake an approved dive medical from a diving referee. You don’t need to be an athlete to dive, anyone who is reasonably fit should have no problems, but due to the nature of diving, there are some limitations. The medical can be arranged through your own doctor or we have an extensive list of approved bodies. We advise you to arrange this as soon as you become a member.
Training and testing
This is undertaken by the experienced Open Water Instructors and Rescue Divers within the club, on a one-to-one basis where possible.
Pool training (Local school or private pool by appointment only)
In the pool you will be taken through the basic divers swimming training, snorkel training and aqua-lung training incorporating buoyancy control and all the skills you will need for your diving experience.
Theory
You will be required to attend a series of lectures on your specific training grade, these will be held weekly or as required.
Your participation in these sessions will be 'signed up' by the lecturer. There is a question paper to test your understanding at the end of each series of lectures. Should you have any problems please speak to the lecturer as these lectures can be re-run should you have missed one or two.
Further training
When you have completed any pool and theory training you will be qualified as Elementary diver and continue the open-water training. The club will organize training dives for you to obtain further Club diver or dive leader qualifications. Later you may want to continue training for other diver qualifications or for qualifications through national and regional SAA courses such as boat handling, oxygen administration, VHF radio, Diver rescue, manikin handling and deployment / rescue, instructor and a wide range of other speciality courses
